Thanks Leo, I've been using the ConfigServer plugins and it's actually the check that tells me I should use mod_security.

Is there any downsides?
I have a VPS from ServInt with WHM & root access via SSH as well as with a GUI (Virtuozzo). It's running on CENTOS 4.8. It's a click of the mouse to set up a new hosting instance that will have cPanel accessible by the client. In addition, the VPS has 30 GB of storage and plenty of memory assigned to it.

I also get 4 dedicated IP addresses so I will often pop my Joomla dev site for any given client on one of the dedicated IPs to simulate real world performance on a domain but without having to have a domain name assigned to the site while its in development.

When I develop a new Joomla site for a client, I always try to encourage them to host their site on my server as its perfectly optimized to run Joomla and I know I won't run into some of the many problems often reported when people are trying to run Joomla on not so optimal hosting platforms.

ServInt's support is also fantastic, they pick up the phone on one ring and they also have a nice support ticket system. One downside of having your own VPS is that you are solely responsible in case any email address associated with your server might be involved in spamming. You can then get black listed and that causes some minor but solvable headaches.
I've spent much of the last month working on a "Perfect Setup" for use with my own clients. It's based on Ubuntu + Lighttpd w/Fastcgi + PHP5.2 + mySQL5.1 + Lua for url rewriting. There is a plethora of information on the net to help with getting this setup configured and tweaked so as to get the best performance possible.

The kicker is that its running on a Rackspace cloud server (just the basic 256mb plan) and is noticeably faster than my normal shared hosting LAMP stack.

I would definitely encourage anyone with the time and patience to try this setup to do so.
Thanks all.. I guess what I was really after is definitive answers on the pros and cons of mod_security... anybody?
Norm - will you please repost to the Site Builder group - and then link back to this thread - to continue discussion? We are closing the forum on the home page to simplify. Thanks!
