Here, we can keep a listing of various types of information about the Joomla! Project and where you might find it. It can be difficult to navigate the volume of data there. So, let's pull out some of the more important locations and make it visible.
This might also be good source material for Getting Started with Joomla!, or PR.
Official Project Announcements
Official announcements are always posted on Joomla.org and typically announced in the Forums. If you want to minimal information, at least subscribe to this feed or the forum announcements. That will give you upgrades, which includes core security fixes.
Joomla! Project Leadership
In the past, several members of the core team preferred their membership situation not be made into a big announcement and, as a result, the Core Team decided to handle membership changes by keeping the Joomla! Project Leadership list current.
Open Source Matters
There is an OSM News Blog but no public email list. OSM manages many approval processes, including Trademark permissions, Joomla! User Group authorizations, and inclusion in JoomlaConnect. In reality, gaining access to most resources (other than core code) can first involve verification by OSM and that process can take time.
Developer Mailing Lists
Development is one of the responsibilities of the Production Working Group Leaders. There are four different developer mailing lists. External community can request membership to these groups and should be mindful of purpose.
- General development- anyone who has questions about Joomla! development, including extension development, etc., can post there. The core developers typically watch these posts and offer ideas.
- Joomla! Bug Squad - Bug Squad members sometimes post issues for broader discussion
- Joomla! CMS development - Joomla! 1.6 focus on visible parts of Joomla!, core extensions, templates, etc.
- Joomla! Framework- Joomla! 1.6 focus on the core framework.
For those who are looking to set-up environments, Mark Dexter (Joomla! Leadership Team, Bug Squad Lead), created great documentation for XAMPP/Eclipse. Very much recommend using this, if you are looking for an environment that works well for J! development.
