This is the first discussion on the new ATAAW site we are planning to create.

I would like to get the opinion of the members on what features you like on the current site, and what you would like to have in the new site as well.

Here's how I see this in the grand scheme of the new site build:

This discussion: Functions and Features phase. What do we want to have for communication tools on the site.

Phase 2(new topic): As outlined by this discussion, create a list of the most important key features and determine the best extensions available to meet those specific needs. If there is a specific need not readily available, determine if we have the resources to fill that need.

Phase 3(new topic): Determine a roadmap/project outline and secure the manpower needed to implement our vision and GET IT DONE.

Wishful Thinking or Aggressively Optimistic? >>> Next month we will be in our new home on a Joomla based website.

Please try to keep this discussion about the features we use the most and also what's missing from the current platform

Above ALL let's make this a fun exercise.

I will update this post to show the features as they are requested by all of us:

Front Page with multiple streams from latest blogs and comments etc...
  • Multi-User Blog Feature similar to Ning now.
  • Featured Posts for Blog.
  • Comments on Blog Posts.

Forum Component - Needs to be better than Ning though...

Killer Navigation System - No not GPS for your monitor... although twitter has that now.

Groups - With Blogging/Discussion Feature

Newsletter

Advanced Search

Rich Media - Video Gallery, Image Gallery, Music

Doc Downloads - PDF, Documentation, White Papers etc.. etc...

RSS feeds - Outbound for blog/articles/posts etc...

RSS feeds - inbound from j.org, etc...

Polls/Surveys - Beyond simple though...

Peer Moderation - Report Post Function?

Twitter integration

Social bookmarking

Mail Alerts

Events Calendar

Private Messages  - Member<-->Member communication

Weblinks (to resources not our sites)

Resources Directory = Member Profile Page
  • A place for members to list your current Business or Service - many fields
  • Integrated with User Profile
  • Advanced Search capability.
  • User Dashboard - Should show all of your activity site wide
  • Pull Events into Profile

CCK- Article-Tutorial-Guides

  • Multi-Categories
  • A better text editor would be great especially for tutorial and guide writing.
  • Some other ways to facilitate just better organization and writing of tutorials/guides.
  • Voting Up/Down
  • Attachments Per Article

Wiki - For Collaborative Drafting

Since I started this discussion, I will start off with a feature I would like to see, and that's Resources Directory for all of us to have a place to list our business or service. Most of us are in businesses related specifically to Joomla, so what better place to feature your business or service than on an Independant Joomla Developers Network?

I'll second that and up the ante a bit ;-)

What would really rawk is profiles for site members to include company information, and then have a searchable directory so I can filter for just designers, companies with products, etc. That would be the shiznit, boyee!

As for other features, typical discussions, rich profiles, and rich media (that is something we have failed to take advantage of to this point).

Most importantly, note that most folks leaving Ning are only now discovering that they cannot take their data with them. This was a major fear of mine when this community was started in the first place, which kinda makes me feel just a tad validated :-)
ok ill hit the obvious. the blog feature was quite swell. so just a blog category would fit. Comments of course.
A better forum, i would even volunteer to mod for it :)
Sharing capabilities, etc... newsletter. Ill think of more later.
I think we could start to replace Ning as a social network using elgg + JFusion:

http://elgg.org/
http://www.jfusion.org/

Both FOSS projects of high quality and would allow the best integration with Joomla and other social networks. If further integrations are needed we could implement them as JFusion plugins and help the actual JFusion project.

We could also look for donated licenses of other great extensions, such as Flexicontent, Flexiaccess, JomComments and MyBlog from Azrul.
That's pretty much in line with the phase 2 discussion there David.

We want to get the features list together first, then determine the software route in the next round of discussions.

I would like to offer jSocialSuite to the community free of charge. Current profile feature works similar to that of ning. Our groups capability is ready but not yet released it's still in testing stage and we will have full Agora forum integrated into the groups as is here on ning with Full agora capabilities.

If this is of any interest, I will gladly share what we can and put full eforts into making this ready as quickly as possible
You can currently get user data from NING via CSV file and we can convert this data to create a new Joomla user set sending out temp passwords to all members
Our current groups system is completely searchable but the profile system is only searchable by users and not business. However we would be happy to supply this as well if more details are given based on the needs

Hope we can be of assistance
Hazzaa and the jVitals team
I would like to postulate that the chat feature did not seem add much.
OK, I would also vote for videos, photos, albums, etc. When you think in the long run on how to keep the community connected and vibrant, this tools are essential. Picture yourself with videos from different joomla events, conferences, same as photos, etc. Let me clarify I do not mean just photos for fun, we have facebook for that, but now we are more and more into a rich media world.

I too vote for blog, even perhaps such as that anyone could have its own blog plus then the community coordinators could highlight featured posts or have some blogs. This would imply reporting non-compliant content, also.

Don't know if we fall off-scope from a community vision, but documents repositories (manuals, ebooks, etc) might be of application???

Then a "dashboard" to consolidate all of your activities in one page, so you can grasp the activity each member has in the community.

I think we have a wonderful opportunity to showcase what Joomla could do and also stress it and push it to new levels.

All of the community will benefit for the experiment, regardless of the end result.

I'm definetely in, let me know how I can be of help!

Willie.
Whichever Joomla social extension is chosen, I'd be glad to donate a free custom design and template from the JoomlaPraise team

I agree Mitch and Robert's Joomla Extension Emporium has just the component in mind that can do exactly this out of the box. I'll even throw in a free set of custom templates for it and one of those hoola girls for the dash! :)

Some other ways to facilitate just better organization and writing of the above.
