This is continuation of a subject started in the Forum:

With all the talk about what we are trying to accomplish with this joint effort ( developers resources/comparisons directory, educational tools for open source developers, etc ), it got me thinking that we need to get a clear idea of what we are trying to accomplish. There are several (at least 2+) ideas/projects that are being discussed, and a couple of times the threads have gotten "inter twined" with each other.

Something that might clear these matters up would be creating a Mission Statement for the project:

I googled "Open Source Mission Statement" (w/o quotes in search) and the first link was the Open Source Application Foundation Mission Statement. Take some time to read it!

Considering who we are, and what we are going to do, this seems like a good example of what info that we need to create a Mission Statement of our own.

Did you have a draft for everyone's review? Will be good to get feedback. Thanks!
Here is what I have so far regarding our groups "Mission Statement". Please feel free to add your input/thoughts, and we will further refine it over the upcoming weeks. Once we have completed the "Mission Statement", I will publish the finished product on our Blog. Thanks everyone for your participation in this group!

Mission Statement

THE MISSION
Become an empowered, positive, active, contributing and collaborative free software community.

THE CHALLENGE
- Bring our community back together, learn to discuss even difficult subjects and find ways to look for solutions that work for most, if not all, participants.

- Find what we collectively want available for the project, organize ourselves, do the work, and contribute the results to the project.

GAME PLAN
Envision the dream
- Develop a culture of respect, collaboration, communication, openness, and trust.
- Focus on the work, the code, the training material, the user interfaces, the results, the common good, and the technology.

SUSTAIN THE EFFORT
- Develop the tools and environment needed to work together, and with the project's involvement and support, and with the group's enthusiastic approval and leadership, move this base camp into Joomla.org.
lol - Yes, fun. Good.
Instead of "Bring the community back together" - I should have proposed "Bring the community together". Maybe remove "back."

Good job, Mark!
Absolutely.

Hi Mark,

I like this initiative and am pretty happy to see where this is going. I would like to add some suggestion, minor and subtile, but with a mission statement you need to be absolute correct about what you mean ;-)

The current wording suggests that some of the aspects are not yet happening in our community. I think it is a matter of perspective and certainly the way you can look at it, but I think implicit statement in some lines could be improved.

First suggestion is to change the mission "Become an empowered, positive, active, contributing and collaborative free software community." into "Be an empowered, positive, active, contributing and collaborative free software community.

Next I suggest for example to change the following line "Bring the community together, learn to discuss even difficult subjects and find ways to look for solutions that work for most, if not all, participants" to Bring the community together, discuss topics (simple and difficult) and find ways to look for solutions that work for most, if not all, participants"

Regards, Wilco
Much improved.

Oops! Mark can you look back at Brian's comments and do your wonderful melding trick to include those ideas, as well? Thanks!

As a noob to this group, and while very familiar with Joomla!, also a noob to a developers group, I think this is a very good mission statement. I especially like the part about 'irrespective of reputation and experience' as this make me feel included, and encourages me to contribute to the community.

It strikes me that this particular part of the collaboration would work well in a google wave, because you could see what each person is contributing in a 'stream of consciousness' form. Just a thought. Of course, we'd all have to have Google Wave accounts, since its still in beta, and maybe we don't.

Anyway, just a thought. Keep up the good work. I'll chime in from the peanut gallery from time to time.

Eric
