"Cannot instantiate mail function"

This error is appearing after the registration submission when the official Joomla French language pack is set as the default for the site; no activation email is sent. English works fine, no errors and the activation email is sent.

Thought it may be something with the host/email, but nope, installed the official Spanish and Dutch language packs to test that theory, and they too work just fine; activation emails sent to the registrant, nicely in Spanish and Dutch :)

Went ahead and got the full French Joomla install and tried that on the same hosting account. Same thing: when French is the default front end language, the error; switch to English, Spanish or Dutch and all works fine.

I went through all off the FR language (.ini) files that I thought may be involved (user, contact, "main") but I am obviously missing something :) Any one have an idea of where else to look? I posted this on the Joomla.fr forum as well, but as yet, no reply.

Cheers!

That's strange, I never had this bug. But that's probably because I use Community Builder. The registration process is different.

I'll check on one of my test sites to see if I have that problem too.
I don't have that problem on my test site. Do you have any plugin or extension that could cause that?
No, none at all. This initially cropped up on a client's site so I did an install on a test site to try to track it down, Did two, actually; one was the basic English Joomla install with sample data and the other was the complete French translation Joomla install, with sample data. No other extensions added, As mentioned, with French set as the default front end language, I get the error. When I installed the Spanish and Dutch language pack. and set them as the default front end language, no problem; same as with English on either when set to the default front end language.
I'll try to reproduce the problem and see if I can find a fix.

Eclipse + xdebug are my friends in case like that.
Thanks Alain! ... that would be fantastic! ... I'll owe you a beer or 5 at the next JUGMTL meet-up :-)
In previous Joomla releases, somewhere around 1.5.5 if I remember correctly, there has been a problem with the French language package. Jean Marie Simmonet fixed this. Suggest you drop a post on the Joomla bug squad mailinglist, or contact Jean Marie directly. (contact me if you do not have his info at hand)
Thanks, Leo, but unfortunately, no change; still the error :( Switch the front end language to English, Dutch or Spanish and all works well.
