JUGs and the Joomla! Community
As a member of the Joomla! Community I've had the initially difficult experience of seeking info about starting a JUG in the appropriate place, the joomla.org websites, and found little, if any.
Being directed to the OSM site, what we find is the same "Viacrucis" as any other user interested in getting a license to use the Joomla! trademark/copyright.
After submitting our JUG Registration we don't get any reply as to whether it was received or not.
Posting in the Registered Joomla! User Group Forum doesn't help much, as we get no answers or when we get some it takes a long time, and, of course, the known excuses are somewhat acceptable. Though we just get curious as we see people involved in the process answering newbies' questions in the main Forums. Not that that isn't necessary/important.
When will this change? (be better)
When will JUGs creation be encouraged and taken a little bit seriously?
When will JUGs websites feature the Community Showcase?
When will we stop feeling as if begging to become part the colaborative process?
Am I just going through a bad hair day? Or not?

Hi Lorenzo,
I thankfully accept your kind offer.
This isn't the first time you offer to help and I trully believe we are doing what is required of us to make our community a better one.
I posted days ago in the appropriate forum http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2010006#p2010006 asking for confirmation whether our entry was received or not, but haven't gotten any reply yet.
I am letting the other applicants know about the status of their entry so they can act accordingly.

I am one of the coordinators of JoomlaDF - Brazil, which also made its request. Like Manuel also did not get response.
What can we do to know the status of the request and the deadline to be processed?
Here in the region have a very specific case of inappropriate use of the name Joomla and we need to act quickly.

It would be nice to see a forum area, like the new Joomla! Magazine forum area, where JUGs are able to interact with one another, share ideas, brainstorm solutions to problems, etc., and work in the open, where others can observe and learn and hopefully open a JUG of there own.
I like your list of ideas, Manoel, and know others are likely facing the same challenges. Thanks for your post and being an important part of the J! community.
I don't know if you are having a bad hair day - your hair looks fine in your picture, though. :) -

Some will say that Forum area already exists, http://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=562 (somewhat hidden and forgotten), but there doesn't seem to be any encouragment towards that interaction, specially after the long winding road one has to take towards meeting the requirements of the trademark/copyright policy.
To those who come accross these difficulties, among others, reading "The Road Less Traveled" is definitely a requirement!

Ooops. Indeed, you are right, there is one. I had forgotten about that area. It does seem like we are missing some interaction - some energy - dialog - something that could be happening between these JUGs. Maybe some leadership in that area where the goal is to help people interact on the topic of JUGs and events.
I do agree that a lot of the structural changes we have made, as a project, like the GPL, and the TM, have kind of impacted community enthusiasm. I also think the GPL and TM advancements are really good steps forward, we are just learning how to involve people the right way.
When you think back, in the GPL talks, we had A LOT of community involvement, but no structure to the discussions, and it got out of hand and really hurt community. With the TM, we had no discussion or community involvement at all, and that probably didn't help, either. In both cases, I think the decisions are good ones but we are still trying to figure out the right magic for involvement.
2010 needs to be about building community. The JUGs are obviously very important. It will be good to see that group get more interactive and exciting - more dialog and cross sharing. It's good that there is a place at joomla.org for that to begin, now we need leaders need to rise up from the JUGs and add a little (positive!) passion in there! -

Totally agree with you!
I see Alex's effort in that direction, http://jandbeyond.org/ , and wish I could be there in May.
Unfortunately or fortunately, there's plenty of work to be done in our area that will very much serve as preparation for an event as important as that one will be.
Wishing Alex and everyone that do participate the best of times and may they share with the community all the good stuff we know is about to be shared sometime, somewhere, somehow.
Particularly, I would like to see a www.jugs.joomla.org happening in the near future. Maybe that idea could get to Alex, if he already didn't have it. I am more than willing to do my share!

there are various JUG groups accross linkedin and ning, but i think a lot of JUGs like being country /state/town/pub specific.
Perhaps Paul O could put a link from the official JUG page to the JUG forum if one is not already there, -

I am surprised you are still waiting on this! Especially with Lorenzo offering to help.
What in the world is taking so long for these JUG applications. There are people who have waited over a year in the NL and they did not get any response so they decided to go forward, hoping not to get into trouble.
When we originally talked about JUGs it was intended as a community thing that really did not require much of the project's involvement except to get the name on a list on community and add the leaders to a google group. That should be a simple job.
It would be good to hear what this entails now and I fear it also is getting into the TM situation. If so, again, I hope one day we can look at simplifying this because it would take quite a bit to convince me it protects our trademark to make organic local community groups wait months, and even over a year, without response. Certainly that doesn't protect a brand, either.
I don't mean to sound rude, but there is an obvious problem here.
There are so many people who would help if a call were made. I read in the Community Working Group minutes that they are taking over this task. It looks like they are also in the final stages of approving a form for people to volunteer. So, not sure when, but at some point they will have a process for people to sign up if they are interested in helping.
We seem to be over complicating what should be simple and in the process, and in doing so we are discouraging community involvement. Very frustrating.

Hello Amy,
Here in JoomlaCalango also await yet, unfortunately.
As you know our "JUG" is organizing the JoomlaDay Brazil in 2010, to be held in September. It's a bad we are doing it without being recognized as a true JUG.
We hope to see this resolved before the event.
