All Together, As A Whole

Independent Developer and Web Site Builders Network

I think this event should not be "just another Joomla!Day". Okay, it is international, but it has some other goals than the Joomla!Days we allready have all over the world. It could be partly the same (with how-to-sessions etc.), but it could be interesting and inspiring to make the differences explicit.

Like:
  • this is not in the first place about how to use Joomla!, but where we want to go to, as we all together are the captain on this ship. How is the internet evolving, the place of open source in it? What will Future bring... and what do we want to bring to Future.
  • we could have a look at our organisation. Introspection. The meta-level. Ask people from other organisations (like Drupal) to tell about their dreams and nightmares. Ask some people to tell why they choose another product.. and learn from it (and/or join the others...)
  • I agree that the first goal is to meet people. But on a regional or national Joomla!-day a considerable part of those contacts are business-contacts (e.g. to know the expertises of your fellow Joomla!-devs, so you know who you can best ask to do a particular job). I think that we now mainly meet to share ideas about our J!-ship, the seas we are sailing, the other ships, the pirates and whale-hunters, the treasures and above all: where do we want to go to. (maybe ask someone from TomTom...)
  • forks &distros. Group inertia vs going forward. How to build a better community? How to deal with community-problems? Maybe we can experiment with some alternative ways to exchange ideas, other than some people in front of an audience (participating or not).

Robert Douglass, from Drupal, has already indicated he is hoping to attend.

Great topic, thanks for getting it rolling.

All good points. For me, it's important to meet in person, from time to time, with those who are working together within the Joomla! community. There's nothing like having an occasional beer together and learning what cool things other people are doing, to help strengthen a community.

This is different than a JoomlaDay event in that it's geared more towards the hard-core Joomla! developers and site builders. People who use Joomla! professionally and have a vested interest in building a stronger project. It is very important to me that Joomla! core developers and leaders are also in attendance. It's a good time to brainstorm and share ideas, and also to make personal commitments to what each of us will do to improve our project.

I very much want to see OSM and the Joomla! Leadership get behind this community initiative and help us all take this next big step towards a stronger community. Thanks to Robert for firing it up and to all of you committed to making this happen.
