I Pledge the First $50 to "The Cause"

It is my understanding there is some discussion going on between OSM "leadership" and the organizers of this conference regarding OSM's blessing, use of the word Joomla, $500 for Joomla events, and various other BS which seems to be the rule these days when dealing with OSM bureaucrats.

Since this group was formed over 2 months ago I am also going to assume nothing has been resolved.
There is still discussion and debate here on something as basic as the name of the conference.
Since this simple issue has not been resolved I am also assuming that OSM has been their usual selves and done their usual bureaucratic arrogant BS and either not been supportive and/or still wrangling for control. (nice run-on)

So, I hereby pledge the first $50 to:
- Tell OSM where they can ... deposit their $500
- Fund a legal defense fund to defend against OSM's attacks

Requirements:
- A conference name must be selected within 1 week of this post
- The conference name must include the word Joomla in the title
- At least 10 people need to pledge
- OSM must have been told to deposit their money somewhere else

There are well over 500 members here now.
10 pledges of $50 = $500 (duh)
100 pledges of $50 = $5,000

$5,000 is more than enough to get started with a defense against OSM.
Should more be necessary I for one would contribute more, and I am sure any such legal conflict with OSM would certainly rally the troops and raise more funds. Just collecting $20-$50 apiece from every person whom I have seen publicly express disgust with OSM's heavy handed tactics would raise a lot of money.

Politically they would be stupid to pursue any action.
"Yes, we attacked the biggest community event ever planned...ahhh, to protect Joomla."
But common sense has not stopped them so far, so who knows.
The arrogance of anointed bureaucrats is legendary.

Again - OSM's support is not needed to have a successful conference.
The Joomla websites advertising is overrated and not needed.
We could have spent the last 2 months promoting on every community website on the planet.
Promoting that this is not an official conference could actually be turned into a plus in the current climate.

How much longer is this going to drag on?

So either name it "Unofficial 2010" or start collecting funds now.
(OMG it would be sooooo much fun to promote Unofficial 2010, it would have instant buzz)

So who else will pledge $50 to get this thing rolling?

Mmmm coffee and biscuits again. Trying some dark chocolate ones tonight instead of the usual milk chocolate for a change
Let's separate things to keep it clear:

1. use of the name Joomla! for our conference
2. pre-finance of the conference
3. defense or attack against OSM

1. is no problem. I thought we had already agreed upon that. I found your explaination of the difference between the use of the name of the CMS and trademark infringement very clear and good. And if we present it as the Joomla!-community that, officially or unofficially, talks about Joomla!, then no judge (and certainly not in Europe) would ever see it as a trademak infringement. It would be a statement to not wait for a reaction of OSM, but I am sure they won't be so stupid to go to court for this. Besides: there is a movement in the right direction, isn't there (or am I to optimistic and naive)?

2. is no problem. Sure, we don't need those $500, but it would be unfair if we wouldn't get them. Because we need the name now, we cannot wait for a decision from OSM (or it must be taken within a week); everybody understands. If pre-financing the conference is an issue, then we can organise something like you said. But it must be clear for what purpose the money is. If money is needed I will pay too and so will enough others (or am I to optimistic and naive?).

3. I don't think it is necessary to spend money to solve problems with OSM. I would say the communication has just started to improve... and that is much more effective, both in costs as in results (or am I to optimistic and naive?).

BTW, I like the dark chocolate ones more.

Love dark chocolate. Emmmm.

I would also love to promote the Unofficial 2010 Conference.
Been thinking about - it would be really easy to have all kinds of buzz building copy.

@Herman
So I can count on your $50 pledge? ;-)
Sounds like we have some areas of agreement.

I guess more than anything I think the wrangling with OSM is just a big non-productive time waster.
It is a waste of time and effort to go in circles with them.
They have no deadlines. They don't have to care.
Reminds me of the old joke from the days of the phone company monopoly:
"We don't care because we don't have to, we're the phone company."

Also a giant waste of volunteer enthusiasm and momentum.

@Brian, perhaps I should adopt your current coping method . . .
OK, hehe, here goes . . .
"Can I pay you Saturday for a hamburger today?"

I have a question for our UK friends: Is it illegal to mock The Queen?
Dunno why this whole thing made me think of that . . .

I'll sure pledge $50 to help with the conference/recoup what we might have gotten from OSM.

A lot of silliness going on around the permission to use the name issue. All of this is solved by working with Ryan. He's in charge of events and he is a very reasonable person who cares a lot about the project and community and OSM. There's simply no way that we can't make this work. PERIOD. Maybe it won't be official, but it WILL be cooperative.

My vote is also for dark chocolate.
If you need $50 dollars to prefinance the festival: tell me what's the bank account. But my money will not be misused for some silly action against OSM. Said to much about it allready.

The Dutch Queen, in my opinion, would do better in a resort where fairytales belong (in Holland: http://www.efteling.com/NL/Park/Attracties/Sprookjesbos.html), but the majority of our people like this ceremonial folklore. That is sometimes the case with community decisions and democracy: that you can have an opinion that differs from what most people want (but are still respected).

The English Queen is better protected: she will probably be saved by God. ;-)
+ 100
We are in contact with OSM/TheProject. So I see no need to fight this issue to the end. At the moment we are in a discussion about an idea to host the developler confence parallel to our conference. I have no details but I think, if we go this way, it is a win for all.

That would be *fantastic* Robert - thanks!
I'm honestly surprised to see this post here on the site.

Folks - all together as a whole - does also include those in the Joomla/OSM camp!!! This means we are not up to any fight at all. So there is no need to raise any money for any defense or stuff like that.

We will open up our website for the conference soon and there will be an option to participate as an individual sponsor for the event. You can signup then and get your sponsorship if you like to pre-finance the event. This is highly appreciated.

We will have talk with the organizing team today (22nd of December 18.00 CET) and I'm sure we will also find a way how to give discussions about lowering the barriers between community and project during the conference. This is may be something we should more positively discuss that raising even more walls with posts like that ;-).
