For this, of course Juliet meant Joomla!.

What is our name going to be? I created a group called International Event. That might as well be some United Nations event. It says nothing about Joomla! or why we'd be getting together.

Don't forget! In order to use the name Joomla!, we have to submit a name request. The closest fit I see is the Logo and name use request form.

I've been tweeting this as the Joomla! International Event since Joomla! Days have their own rules and, I believe, are limited to local communities. But, it dawns on me, we don't know what we want to call this First Ever Joomla! International Event.

What does everyone think? And Robert, if we have not submitted the form, we should do so. It won't take long to get a response, I am certain. This is an exciting community-driven initiative that I am certain everyone is behind.

I already started pricing airline tickets. I'm sure those prices will come down before May! Eek! ;-)

It could be the Joomla! International Gathering - A Jig
International Joomla! Symposium

International Joomla! Convention

Joomla! World Congress
JoomlaCon
All Together As A Whole Conference (ATAAWC)
Joomla Supporters International Meeting
JSIM
I like this.
Personally I don't like abbreviations and rather choose for a descriptive -but short- name for the event.
Once we have a name nailed down we can start working on a few logos for the event. I like JSIM, but like the graphic possibilities of something like JConf better. Though, perhaps we could use a "!" instead of the "I" in the logo for a few more possiblities.
I haven't ask for the name and logo usage. I have only informed OSM (in name Elin and Ryan) about the fact that I have made the offer to the community for making a conference.

For me this is a community initiative and I think they are can't be a reason that the community don't get allowance for the name Joomla. But at this state we should focus on finding the best name for the event. We can go in discussions with OSM, if we have found a name.

I would name the event "International Joomla Conference"

1) this isn't a national event, so we should call it "international"
2) the main topic is joomla, so joomla should be part of the name
3) I think it is more a conference as a meeting or day

just my 2 cents
Robert
I like the name - I agree completely, it should absolutely say International, this is not a local event, it's our first Let's meet as an International Joomla! Community event. To me, Conference is the right word since it is of that level of importance.

It is, of course, important to see the name Joomla! in the name. We are planning to come together as Joomla! supporters, to share our knowledge about Joomla!, to learn from others about Joomla!, and find ways to help the Joomla! project.

I agree with you, let's figure out the name first, then submit the form to OSM for permission. Joomla! is a registered trademark and OSM oversees the trademark for us, as a community. I cannot imagine any reason that using the name would be denied and it would be appropriate to follow the rules.

I also would love to see the projects involvement. I've invited a number of them to join in and I hope they do! It's awesome to see the community stepping up and get this going.

These are minor details, but important. I agree - Choose the Name first. Submit the Form. Get this baby moving! W00t!
So it's going to be JoomlaCon from what I read, right?

:)
No permission is needed to use the word "Joomla!" in an event name.
I am copying my post from the Joomla forum here.
The post was in response to an OSM representative assertion that permission is required.

No one needs our permission to host an event. They do need permission to use the Joomla! trademark in the name of an event.

My response:

No one needs your permission to use the word "Joomla" in a conference name.

There are many examples of other conference names available all over the planet.

A perfect example right now - The O'Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo
The 2010 conference is not co-sponsored by the MySQL camp as in previous years.

You will notice there is no use of the trademarked MySQL logo on the conference website.
Simply using the database name MySQL is fair use and not covered by trademark law.
MySQL has no legal right to require permission to use the word MySQL in the conference name.

Obviously there has been some split causing O'Reilly to go it alone this year without the participation,
or blessing, or issues of dealing with the MySQL camp.
I did notice the obvious use of the phrase "This inclusive, ..." in the conference description.
Perhaps they had some issues with who was to be or not be included in the conference.

"Joomla" is also simply the name of a content management system.
Using it as that is not a trademark issue.

So I would really appreciate it if you stopped spreading this "mis-information" as fact.
No one needs your permission to use the word Joomla in the name of a conference.

Sure OSM can keep bullying people via rules for listings, etc.
But as far as a supposed legal requirement to ask permission to use the word "Joomla!"
That is simply bogus.

We need a decision on a conference name ASAP.

An option which has no ambiguity and would be easy to brand and market:

JoomCon 2010 - The International Joomla! Conference and Expo

Heck, one could even trademark JoomCon if they wanted to. ;-)
