Yes I support JoomlaChix. I'm also the first guy in here. That has to count for something. I'm not sure what though.

There have been a couple of very nice ladies who have helped me along the way. Any Joomla! User Group without a couple of JoomlaChix are never going to be as good or as much fun as those without them. Go JUGT!

Building a strong JoomlaChix group is another area that is pretty close to my heart. Open source projects can be pretty intimidating creatures and sometimes difficult for women to get involved.

The participation rates for most open source projects are really low for women, something like 10-15%. That's not good, of course. The neat thing is when projects do things to make their projects more approachable for women, they also make things more approachable for everyone.

There's just no downside to trying to build in diversity and the project, as a whole, ends up with better appreciation for the gifts individuals bring.

Yes! I second the notion Amy, we need more women in Joomla! and other open source projects!

Go JoomlaChix!

Hey Ladies! (We really do rule, don't we?!!?)
Amy, do you happen to have participation percentages for women in IT and/or web development in general? Would be a good reference point for women in open source projects......

Vika, I wonder if we would immediately discover more women in Joomla! if those who are posing as guys admitted they were girls. Do you think this is still happening in 2009? I know it was years ago. This was so the ladies could avoid ignorant males and enjoy hassle free participation in online communities.

I've seen some numbers here and there and saved to my delicious account. I'll try to pull some of that resource material together. That's a good idea. Angie Byron (aka, Webchick) has a lot of good material on her site, including presentations she has given. We need that type of information. Yea! Real JoomlaChix! hehe! Love it.

I would hope we've progressed enough as a society and are welcoming enough as a community that people don't feel they have to pose as someone else.

(I deleted my question since I missed Joe's comment, I think he and I were posting simultaneously.)

Yes, I was shocked to hear that some women feel the need to do that. In fact, learning about that, and then having some people tell me they do it was a big reason for me to start actively supporting women online.

Yes, Rafael, I agree! No one should feel the need to do that, regardless of their gender, religious or political beliefs, even their CMS choice!. We need welcoming communities for everyone.
