What should we use for the software of the magazine?

My inclination would be to quick it simple and use vanilla Joomla!, as much as possible. (That way, we could also include a basic "how to" for the first issue.)

Ideas:

- Section for the entire Magazine

- Category for each month. And then, of course, an Article for each Article. :)

- Category for all of the Author Profiles. And an Article for each Author. Recommend using a Standard Article format for each Article Profile, along with a nice picture. Also recommend updating the profile and link to each Article an author writes. The Article itself should include a link to the profile from each article or we can make a quick module to embed a bit of the profile, with a link to the full page.

- Use Meta Tags so that Related Items Module can be used for basic Tags. This should be enough.

The Cover Page of each Issue can be a simple Category Blog.

Also, need a page listing all issues. That could be a simple Article page with hardcoded links. Something very easy.

We might want to recruit a designer who would work on layouts and provide specifications for image sizes, pay layouts, typography, etc. Anyone know a designer?

Other ideas on technical aspects of the magazine? Joomla! core really is plenty, IMO, for a basic community magazine.

Thanks Brian. As it worked out a Joomla! client called me earlier today asking for a temporary blog on their site. After learning more about K2 from your and Amy's earlier posts today, I immediately thought of K2. So I'll install it for them tomorrow and I'll watch that video too. I am looking forward to getting a firsthand look!
When I said "I don't see any concerns here" that phrase was related to eithe:r

1) installing K2 on the community.joomla.org site;
2) as a separate domain.

What I was hoping to communicate to you was that - you and the Community WG should feel confident in making your choice on this specific issue because I have not heard any real concerns expressed by others here.

Does that make more sense? I was in no way suggesting you should or should not be concerned. :-P

Apologies for these communication issues - we will get the radio frequencies yet! I promise!
Ha yes Amy thanks for clarifying that, I didn't originally get what you were referring to regarding that "concerns" point.

But now I see what you meant and you did kind of read my mind, in that I was in part trying to understand the K2 situation better in case that subject came up again with the WG.
Hey Paul,

K2 is really about rich content publishing and templating freedom. The K2 minisite sums it good:
"It provides an out-of-the box integrated solution featuring rich content forms for items (think of Joomla! articles with additional fields for article images, videos, image galleries and attachments), nested-level categories, tags, comments, a system to extend the item base form with additional fields (similar to CCK for those acquainted with Drupal), a powerful plugin API to extend item, category and user forms, ACL, frontend editing, sub-templates and a lot more!

Using K2, you can transform your Joomla! website to a news/magazine site with author blogs, product catalogs, work portfolio, knowledge base, download/document manager, directory listing, event listing and more, all this bundled under one package! Since K2 is extensible with additional fields to its base item form, you can easily create category-specific content types, e.g. article, blog post, product page, directory listing."

I also recommend having a look at this showcase list to see what's possible with just one component: http://k2community.joomlaworks.gr/profiles/blogs/k2-powered-joomla-...

But the most important of all is performance. K2 is developed primarily with performance in mind and we plan to prove our statement the coming months with 2 websites released, each with over 110,000 (migrated) articles.

Despite the vague situation on the Magazine, we will showcase a few mockups based on K2 features. And we hope you (the community) will like it.

Thank you. :)
Thanks Fotis!

I remember reading some pre-release or very early release reviews of K2 and they didn't do a very good job of explaining what K2 did, at least not for me. Amy and Brian have helped clarify this for me in the past day or so, and now you have as well. Your site's description also does a good job of clearly explaining what K2 does. So I guess the lesson for me is to not rely too heavily on pre-release or early release reviews.

I have downloaded K2 today for a new project for an existing client, so I should be getting more familiar with it through that experience. I will also watch the video on this site that Brian has given his strong "thumbs up" review for.

I am one of many who I know are looking forward to seeing your upcoming mockups. Based on everything I have recently learned about K2, I am sure they will be great!
Two features that will certainly interest the admins of the new Magazine site if it's agreed to be built with K2...

1. Inline comment editing with ajax in the backend - so that admins can re-write/correct comments (aside the usual actions).

2. Frontend ajax editing for all the comments added only in a user's posts (items) - that means each contributor can now moderate the comments added in the articles/posts they wrote, making the overall admin process easier. The editing is done in a single window. Each article contributor can see a link to this comments editing modal box when they login in the frontend.

This features are coming within November with the release of K2 v2.2...
