I think it's time for an official templates.joomla.org for GPL templates
WordPress & Drupal have them, why doesn't J? Templates are one of Joomla's biggest strengths, and many ppl out there offer quality gpl templates. Thoughts?

I guess I am feeling for the Joomla security team that is constantly dealing with Joomla has security holes myth.

I have seen a site with a 280K menu sprite. (sprites are to reduce load in a high performance environment, as large as that sprite was, it should have been about 28k, needless to say that joomla was slow to load.

Just a quick sanity check on index.php and the html directory and run yslow on it.

There shouldn't be much in the templates that requires much as the views should generally not be exploitable. as the controller should be handling all the user input and receiving mostly(only?) trusted output.

I wouldn't want a panel of pros rating the templates, I would want the panel to give a thumbs up or down and a numeric score.

They could also comment on the templates, but ratings should mostly be user driven.

The more I'm thinking about this the more it looks like a reasonable project.

One issue that is unresolved is what to do about security updates to templates. In this day and age I am not sure one should just wait for it to become a problem.
I wish to help!
I have been working on my own set of template standards (sort of like W3C or CSS Zen Garden). I haven't worked on it in a while, but if the JTD is going to happen, I would be happy to draw up a criteria of what makes a good template and what doesn't.
That's a great idea and would be a big help
I'm with you, Kyle. I think there definitely needs to be an official directory. Here are my thoughts:

It should have the following search capabilities:
1) Search by provider
2) Search by layout
3) Search by main color
4) Search by free or commercial

It should also support ratings and reviews.

There should be a 3 strikes and you're out policy for developers who like to "borrow" designs from others. Not sure how you would police this, since anyone could claim that their designs were stolen, but we all know of a few repeat offenders who might get disqualified from listing in the directory.

If we can't do an official directory at templates.joomla.org, I have a good domain name we can use for an unofficial one. :)
I would love to see this. It would strenghten Joomla by consolidating a one-stop directory of templates. Right now I always hit the sites I know and like but wonder what I'm missing. The ability to search by color, provider, commercial or non- etc. would be wonderful. It would be a very useful resource!
Hey Kyle .. cool one ! I have this idea since many days ... m IN for this ... Let's get started :)
I'm super keen to be involved and have been hankering for this for a very long time - I started this thread in Aug 2008!

Count me in and I'm happy to help.
Can we just have a directory like bestofjoomla, which shows popular and well-rated providers and templates? Otherwise vetting each template against a set of standards is going to be a prohibitive amount of work? Do templates need the official seal of approval to be listed?
Cory,

Good ideas. Perhaps we could also add the intention or purpose of what a template is designed for? I guess this would be compared to tags in bestofjoomla?

Thanks,
Bill
Hi Kyle,

I'm up for this it would be great to include both free and commercial templates, even if in separate directories.

Thanks,
Bill
Thanks for the overwhelming support on the idea everyone. We'll need to put together a plan and present to the OSM board. I'll count on everyone's ideas and help getting this off the ground, and then maintaining it.

I think it's best to copy the Mosets Tree structure current used for the JED and JRD. My only concern: does Mosets Tree support tags and custom fields (similar to bestofjoomla)?
