I've been trying to come up with a project that would keep me interested and enable me develop my coding skills and to blog about as a way of sharing this knowledge. I had considered trying to upgrade the j1.0 Prince Clan Chess game which had caused one of my original sites to get hacked because it was missing an if not session die command. While I might return to that idea at a later date, I've found my true calling!!! (until I'm good enough to contribute to core code that is). And that is Mafia City

http://www.openrpg.fr/

It's a completely open source mafia component for joomla and I'd been thinking about some kind of joomla Browser War engine for a while. Anyone who has played any on the Zynga games on Facebook will know what I'm on about.

The game, code and website are all in French, but upon request today they immediately set up a little ol' subforum for English speakers and anybody who is that quick to respond is ok in my books.

Thing is they don't release the component as a separate entity instead it is embedded in a J1.0 installation.

So the first thing I'm interested in is setting up a dialogue with the rest of the people on the site and translating the game and instructions for English speaking users.

Later, maybe help with a methodology for easier localisation. And then find out if they have some roadmap about eventual j1.5 or j1.6 code upgrades. I'm also thinking that this might eventually benefit from anahita style social network framework.

If anybody is interested please feel free to respond here or in the English speaking forum at

I've been messing about with the game over the weekend. Can't say I fully understand it but it seems complete if not a little bit boring. But that's ok I'm obviously missing a lot language wise. And these games are meant to be played for a few minutes a day. I speed up the game mechanics on occasion to compensate.

If anyone wants to check out what I'm on about you can click here for my semi-anglicised version.

none of the front page is translated, but I'm sure you can all register into a joomla site regardless of language.

If anyone wants admin access just let me know.

I've been through the code, and while it appears to be structured in an MVC style (with views and controllers) even though it is a joomla 1.0 component, it is completely full of "end user" text. So I'm guessing the next step is to make a spreadsheet and notate every occurrence of either User Interface text and game text along with proposed language string alternatives.

It appears the original programmer won't be continuing this project but instead will be focusing on his more complex non-joomla rpg system. However I'm convinced he will help us in any way to internationalise the game system.

Obviously it would be nice to jump straight into upgrading it to j1.5 but I'm convinced if we separate the the content first, we'd have a better model and structure that is ready for upgrading. To date the author has focussed on the actual game elements and rightly so.

I'm hoping that soon enough a few of the developers(mentors) here would go over the current code and help draw up a roadmap. But for know I'll focus on the spreadsheet.
