Well, yeah! Did it really take a MIT study to tell us this? :-)

MIT Speaks!

With a hat tip to Brian Teeman, I present for your enjoyment and edification:http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100930143339.htm"When it comes to intelligence, the whole can indeed be greater than the sum of its parts. A new study co-authored by MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, and Union College researchers documents the existence of collective intelligence among groups of people who cooperate well, showing…See More

Arlen Walker commented on Amy Stephen's blog post 'Call to OSM regarding Joomla Press: Official Joomla! Book'
Since I've been one of those throwing rocks at the trademark page, Steve, let me also say here in public that the new policy is a breath of fresh air. The biggest improvement is probably more in the approach than the policy itself, in that it…

Can't support the idea of waiting until a vulnerability is public knowledge before removing it from JED (so long as "removing" in this case means "making unavailable for download"). If a vulnerability is public knowledge,…

Arlen Walker commented on Amy Stephen's blog post 'Community Improvement Process'
This is an extremely long thread filled with wide and various points. I ask forgiveness in advance if I appear to be missing some point or other. Maybe I did, but maybe also it simply didn't rise to the level of being acknowledged in my…

Yes, you have a PhD. That's wonderful. Just don't touch anything.

Arlen Walker commented on Fotis Evangelou's blog post 'Complete design proposal for the Joomla! Community Magazine'
Just curious, not sure if it's a design or editorial issue: Is there going to be a way for readers to tell the difference between columns and features? Or does there even need to be?

Arlen Walker commented on Klas's blog post 'Unjustified code copyright claims by OSM?'
@ewout "If I as a GPL licensee want to change to another licence, then the GPL does not allow that. But if as full owner of all copyright in a work I can change the licence to whatever pleases me." That's not at all clear. It *is*…

@ewout "Moreover, the project would be free to change its licensing from the GPL to another similar licence." Except that it can't, unless it goes back and rewrites the entire codebase. Once code is GPL'ed, that's it.…

@amy -- I don't see why the assignment is even necessary, except for contributions of entire self-contained systems. Follow: Joomla is GPL. I write a patch, fix a bug, in general write code that depends upon the Joomla API's to work. As I…

Arlen Walker commented on Klas's blog post 'Unjustified code copyright claims by OSM?'
I'm afraid I just don't see the issue, at least for anyone other than OSM. One of us must be confused about the GPL. Maybe it's me. Here's my reading of it: 1) Joomla began as a fork from Mambo where both parties had legitimate…

Arlen Walker replied to Amy Stephen's discussion 'What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.' in the group Joomla! International Conference
If you anticipate trouble with the naming, call it an International Conference on Joomla. That naming structure avoids all trademark entanglements -- you never need a trademark owner's permission to hold a conference on (or about) a…

Arlen Walker replied to Mark W. Bender's discussion 'Joomla! Community Magazine Relaunch Status.....' in the group Joomla! Community Magazine
Considering that members of the core team *have* written content extensions precisely aimed at web-based magazines, I think this "admission" would be tantamount to "admitting" gravity exists. No one with more than one…

Hmm. Email notification must not be working well on that thread. I never logged a reply to it. It's been so reliable on the other boards here I got out of the habit of checking manually. As for title, IANAL but I don't think you strictly…

I have no idea how to go about handing in my first column. I posted a note in one of the other discussions a while back saying it's done and I just need information about what to do next.

Anything that starts like this Going on a code walk, and feeling a bit like the little mustachio'ed man at the end of the parade in "Peabody's Improbable History,", must be savored. Increasingly, I am amused and delighted by you.

Wow - you are fancy! Chess player? I used to play chess all the time. I (thought I) was pretty good, too, until I lost my Queen. Then, dejection set in and I'd give up. If/when you get a chance, Introductions and, of course, jump into any conversation. DRY, or otherwise. Thanks, Arlen, for joining us.
