You should really, really, really look at SobiPro. It already does about 75% of what you seek with this document. Output is XML, so data can be set to any view you create. It has just about any field type you can imagine, and it has a template…

Hi Kareem This is something that has bothered me most of all. However, I went with the thought that the only way of NOT affecting the extension developer was to do nothing at all, which was a bit pointless. Instead, what I have tried to do is come…

This sounds very, very well planned out even at this stage. Great Work The problem really is how much of a rethink will it be from the extension developer's perspective?

Wow, Josh, this is great work. I have struggled with exactly the same issues you are trying to solve. I am in the same  boat, a good user, but not a bit fiddler, so we have to become part of the fan club!  Please someone out there, listen…

Thanks Miguel - feel free to translate it and put it round your people - if there is anything you can feed back into it, I will happily incorporate it either in the body or as an addendum ... or something!

Starting the Joomla CCK Conversation

As a result of talking to several people on this site and others and with some help and encouragement from Matthew Schenker from this forum, I have put together a document discussing the issues around adding full content control (or CCK) to the core of Joomla.I am not technical, so this is not a technical discussion, but rather looks at the entire issue from the point of view of an administrator and client. In the document I am not trying propose a definitive solution, though I do go through one…See More

Very nice to see people taking the idea of working together for mutual benefit that extends beyond just business, and making it work!

*Waves at Amy" I was just thinking about you! I will be sending you the link to the PDF I am currently slaving over when it is finished. I suspect that because of its nature, it may be of more interest to Molajo that Joomla, though I am very…

I am writing a large document that basically goes through the possibilities of building a CCK into the core of Joomla. It is non technical (because I am non-technical) but maybe it might give some brave Joomla devs a roadmap to follow.

Hi Matthew, I think part of the entire problem is the idea of a CCK at all. With Drupal (and the same could happen to Joomla) a CCK was imposed on top of the existing system. With Joomla, what we think of as CCKs do sit rather…

Joss, great post!  Looks like you and I are thinking about the same things, as we both posted on this subject at almost the same time.

I will look forward to reading it! My own take is that Joomla needs a CCK, but that it needs to be very straight forward and logical and not take the user down any particular way of working. With Seblod, my favourite part of their system is that you…

Hi Joss, Glad there are a few people then who are following this! I'd still like to know if a CCK is being considered for Joomla core.  Of course, a lot of people are talking about this, in comparison to Drupal's "CCK"…

Please share a bit about your Joomla! Experience and yourself. The more information you provide the quicker we will be able to process your membership.
I have been playing with Joomla in one way or another since it started. As a composer/copywriter and advertising specialist I have been involved with creating and running various web based communities since the late 90s. I am in the process of creating two new, mass news projects with Joomla 1.6 - one for an online MMO and the other for a satirical international financial news site - the latter of the two will eventually need to service 50 odd writers and a full editorial team.

I have also worked with Liferay and tend to look at that as a bit of a bench mark for what is possible. However, for a non coder like me, Joomla is far more accessible and I am keen to help it grow into something far more flexible than it is currently.

Basic Rules for creating a core CCK for Joomla

Note: See also Matthew's post on the same subject

As Content Management Systems mature and become more and more a part of day to day website development, so the pressure is on to create systems that can be tailored for their end users requirements rather than swamp the user (and for that matter the developer) with so much functionality that…

Sorting out Joomla DB before moving to a CCK

Since the release of Seblod CCK (GA) I have been playing around with it on a personal website.

I am generally very impressed with what they are doing, though I am concerned that some of their approach (especially with regards to templates) maybe unnecessarily complicated.

In using it, the one thing that has occured to me is that before you even start with a CCK are the existing fields in the Joomla default database complete enough? In this case I am thinking primarily about…

Should a CMS be a bit more old fashioned?

I probably have this wrong, but I get the impression that many early CMS type applications were designed on the basis of a couple of people using it and shoving information into the right sized holes so that it looked okay in a web browser.

There is nothing wrong with that, but there is an argument to say that prior to the web, it never worked that way. Actually, it was far more flexible and maliable and how the system worked was a reflection of the type of information involved, and…
