I run the Lamp stuff on Ubuntu desktop rather than Ubuntu server. That way I get both the command line and graphical interfaces. And for remote management using web browser via another desktop on your local net, take a look at Webmin. It is also a…

I actually thought something like this but built on Python + Appcelerator instead. Using Appcelerator would make the GUI cross platform. But of course, only the GUI will be made in Appcelerator, AMP package would be installed separately for differen…

So, after using it a bit, here is some more info. Seems like the first mishap with the garbage at the end was a fluke. Have not seen it since. I had to fix the quotes (don't know if there is any special code for quotes in Word - could not find any…

Well, deleting all the stuff at the end of the article (not visible in the WYSIWYG mode) brought the site back. A little disappointed that using the template css is the default. Turning it off give an error as a css does not exist for the editor and…

So far some positive things and some shocks. Pasted in some text from a Word document opened in OpenOffice. The COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL things first: Pasting in the (long) text with correctly generated footnotes moved all footnotes to the bottom of the d…

Sounds exactly what I need, Brian! Thanks! Going to try now :-)

Should have added that it correctly keeps bold, italic, lists and headlines but strips the rest. There is also a config option where you can add or remove tags that you wish to filter if the defaults aren't perfect for you.

If you can get access to a win/mac box and office then just use JCE to cut and paste. The latest versions do an amazing job at this. (It killed a whole section from my training sessions)

@Srikanth As a follow-up movie later: Do you have any contact with a rockband that uses Joomla? :-) Could be a good case to build a movie around with your music!

Svein I do not envy your task at hand, and commend you for your persistence in this matter. I have written very small sql scripts to move data from a mossets tree directory to sobi2 before, and it was very much trial and error to get it right. I hav…

Well - I decided to jump in and not wait any more. The best thing would have been to get a specialised tool built to extract the information, save it to .csv and then import. But as I did not have this available, I was able to change the standard n…

Here is something we can learn something from: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocRE9aarplI Notice the logo/animation at the end? This is what I think all videos, regardless if it is a "Happy Birthday" or training or launch video should have at the e…

One more thing - a little on the side, but a bit related: There is a possibility to put Joomla and the logo in front of very many people around the world, but it has to be done in a good way and it has to be real. I am talking about news. This COUL…

The easiest possible development server for Joomla

How do you develop websites? Do you have a server at home running on an old PC? Do you use a LAMP stack on you PC/Mac? Or do you use a site hosted on a webhotel somewhere?

I have been using a little bit of everything during the last few years. And the way that work best for me during the first phases of the work is to have a separate server in the house. Especially since the internet lines here are sloooow.

A server could of course be anything - Windows, Mac or Linux. But I wou… Continue

From Word to Joomla and keep only some formatting

I have a project where I need to add a lot of text and have all as Word documents.

The text has been formatted nicely with headings, bold text, italics etc. No graphics.

Of course, under the surface, Word adds A LOT of codes that I do not even think about adding in Joomla. But I need to come up with a workflow for this that takes away all Word specific stuff, but keeps the bold and italics as well as centering of some text.

Does anyone know of any tools that do not str… Continue

Pretty links in Joomla - what is the most solid approach?

I have a blog where I will keep using WordPress just to stay on top of what is going on there. And one thing i really LOVE about WordPress is how simple it is to get it to use pretty links.

Basically, set up the format you want and be done with it. So I use links like this:

What I also love is that for each article, I c… Continue

Sending out e-mail and avoiding the spam trap - how?

We all hate spam. I don't think I can ever say that strong enough. And it has almost destroyed a perfectly good way for people to stay updated on things.

Still, I actually like getting some things delivered to me as a newsletter. Not several times a day, but things that comes once per week or once per month. Or only when there is something big happening.

But how can we send these out? I have been looking for a solution that is simple and easy to manage. It does not need a lot o… Continue
