Sonny,   Thank you for taking the time to comment.I think you bring up a valid point, but I don't think there is a single answer. And in your case, you might have to go with two translations. I have seen some attempts in Norway to come up…

Great! One question. In translating, do we use official terms or ordinary terms? A little background, in my country, the government issued a ministrial decree on (some) official terms to be used when translating from english. Problem is, the terms…

József: This is exactly what I am talking about. We need to start at the translator end. I have a feeling that one of the reasons why the .ini format has been used is that it can be read by using a simple text editor. But this is a…

I would recommend to continue with a standard file format. what is supported by both the open source and the commercial CAT tools (CAT = Computer Assisted Translation). The .ini format is long time supported by the best commercial tools (e.g.…

Hei Ole, It could be that PO files and XLIFF was not too well know in those days. And if I understand correct INI files is also widely used in Windows (or WAS widely used - not sure what the status is now). I definitely understand that INI files is…

Hi Svein, The precise reasoning back then in late 2005 for selecting the INI for the internationalisation improvement in 1.1, later known as 1.5, I cant find a link to at this late hour. But they did some solid homework and made some well…

I will set up an account on Web Translate It and test. Looks interesting. But for Joomla, the tool itslef should be open source so it can be hosted on the joomla.org site if necessary. Pootle is a web service based on Translation toolkit - this is…

Gengo: it doesn't assist you on translations. I can't found any info on License. From another forum I get info on a web base translation tool supporting INI : http://webtranslateit.com/ (free for OpenSource projects) And a Pootle…

Gengo looks interesting. From what I see it is very similar to Transifex that I mentioned in the first post, except it has support for .ini files and is not open source (from what I understand). But I would like to know from someone that has used…

Time for a new language file format in Joomla?

I have tried to do a little bit of translation over the last few months, and got my wife to help me with some other things (she is a pro translator).

And the way of working with Joomla language files was characterized as "stone age" by someone I chatted with today. Why?

There are a lot of great tools available for translation today. Some will set you back a serious amount of money, and some are free and open source. But all the ones that are still being updated have one… Continue

The easiest possible development server for Joomla

How do you develop websites? Do you have a server at home running on an old PC? Do you use a LAMP stack on you PC/Mac? Or do you use a site hosted on a webhotel somewhere?

I have been using a little bit of everything during the last few years. And the way that work best for me during the first phases of the work is to have a separate server in the house. Especially since the internet lines here are sloooow.

A server could of course be anything - Windows, Mac or Linux. But I… Continue

From Word to Joomla and keep only some formatting

I have a project where I need to add a lot of text and have all as Word documents.

The text has been formatted nicely with headings, bold text, italics etc. No graphics.

Of course, under the surface, Word adds A LOT of codes that I do not even think about adding in Joomla. But I need to come up with a workflow for this that takes away all Word specific stuff, but keeps the bold and italics as well as centering of some text.

Does anyone know of any tools that do not… Continue

Pretty links in Joomla - what is the most solid approach?

I have a blog where I will keep using WordPress just to stay on top of what is going on there. And one thing i really LOVE about WordPress is how simple it is to get it to use pretty links.

Basically, set up the format you want and be done with it. So I use links like this:

What I also love is that for each article, I… Continue
