Nice summary, missed the beer... There is also a screenshot of Google on that day where you only had 4 search results...might share that also on this post ;-)

Wilco Jansen commented on Nathan Bohn's blog post 'What do you want to know?'
There has been work done on the code sniffer rules for the coding standards of Joomla. Would be nice to finalize this one so that everyone can use that.

Wilco Jansen commented on Ewout Wierda's blog post 'If you're a developer and haven't contributed to an Open Source project, why not?'
I am not going into the sentiment of things here, lost already to much negative energy in the past on this...seen there, been there, done it. What I would like to explain is the idea behind the bug squad. The bug squad had basically 3 goals; 1) get…

Absolutely...most funny part is when Eric Raymont tells about his elevator encounter with the Vice President Consumer Products of Microsoft..."Who are you?" and he replies "I am your worst nightmare", love it.

Wilco Jansen commented on Ivo Apostolov's blog post 'Fears come true...'
Indeed good grief... Lawrence, I really don't get where this post has been gone, but stating there is a conspiracy of some kind with Google is close to paranoia and has certainly nothing to do with the initial post of Ivo. I have been GSOC…

The "openess" in Elin her post is admirable and promising, but it lacks context and for that it is extremely difficult to interpret the facts. I might share a piece of info here, since I was one of the people in the middle of this…

Wilco Jansen replied to Arunoda Susiripala's discussion 'ESB on PHP' in the group Developers
Any ESB can interact with PHP when you use the available interaction mechanisms. Modern ESB solutions accepts XML (over HTTP), you can use file shares, REST...anything. So I am not sure what you are looking for. Can you be more specific in your…

Amy, very well said! I am one of the growing group of people who do not agree with the course taken on various areas in the project but still I rather focus on concrete proposals to solve the identified issues instead focussing on all bad that has…

Wilco Jansen commented on David-Andrew's blog post 'Who is "Joomla! Leadership"?'
Core team membership was done by a vote (70/70 rule), and members were proposed by fellow team members, so basically it is an invite based join mechanism. The COC is what left of the "old" core team, and as Elin mentioned in her post of…

Wilco Jansen commented on David-Andrew's blog post 'Who is "Joomla! Leadership"?'
There is indeed a lot of mis-understanding of what the leadership of Joomla is. There is a formal side which I will go into shortly after, there is also an informal side that one is based mainly perception/reputation. Ultimate control on all Joomla…

*Moderator note* We only moderate spammers (yes, they even found this site), and we only had one specific situation where we moderated so far. Basically no moderation is needed, and as far as I can see everything is still very civil. Thanks Torkil…

Hierarchical data, nodes and nested sets in 1.6

One of the most requested features for Joomla, beside ACL, was the desire to get rid of the section and category limitation. In Joomla 1.6 this problem is solved by providing the categories to be stored and presented as an hierarchical dataset. Hierarchical data-sets are also available in Drupal for example, the most common known implementation within Drupal is de node structure that is the corner stone of the Drupal data-model.

Well that is interesting, is it not? Joomla 1.6 is… Continue

Quality of open source software is improving

Recently I have been interviewed by a Dutch journalist who pointed me to the "Coverity Scan Open Source Report". His question was why Joomla was not amongst the open source projects in that report. I will not bother you with the interview, but the report itself holds some very interesting information regarding quality of the products and with that the quality of the development of those open source projects.

In the executive summary the following remarks can be found:
