On the fly, language files

Transifex has grown to be a real treat for Joomla devs/users. Personally I really like the concept. I have previously wrote an article, that devs not should let anyone translate there extensions (here)

As a translator, Transifex helps to provide structure and overview (easy to follow updates,…

Starting the Joomla CCK Conversation

As a result of talking to several people on this site and others and with some help and encouragement from Matthew Schenker from this forum, I have put together a document discussing the issues around adding full content control (or CCK) to the core of Joomla.

I am not technical, so this is not a technical discussion, but rather looks at the entire issue from the point of view of an administrator and client.

In the document I am not trying propose a definitive solution, though…

Latin American Joomla: Joomleiro, Juuntos and Jokte

I wanted to share a quick post on community initiatives in Latin America. You might have noticed tweets from folks in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and other Latin American countries and wondered what's going on. While some of the discussion has related to difficulties with the Joomla trademark, the more important message is that community is strengthening and more active in that region. That's good to see and deserving of our support.

In…

CCK Capabilities: In the Core, How to Discuss?

For some time now, there has been heated discussions in the Joomla world about the need for "CCK" capabilities in the core installation.

There are different opinions about what "CCK capabilities" means, but in my opinion it involves at least the following:

  • Capability to create custom fields for Joomla content rather than having to only use built-in fields
  • Capability to accept front-end content submissions through forms comprised of the custom…

Basic Rules for creating a core CCK for Joomla

Note: See also Matthew's post on the same subject

As Content Management Systems mature and become more and more a part of day to day website development, so the pressure is on to create systems that can be tailored for their end users requirements rather than swamp the user (and for that matter the developer) with so much functionality that…

Sorting out Joomla DB before moving to a CCK

Since the release of Seblod CCK (GA) I have been playing around with it on a personal website.

I am generally very impressed with what they are doing, though I am concerned that some of their approach (especially with regards to templates) maybe unnecessarily complicated.

In using it, the one thing that has occured to me is that before you even start with a CCK are the existing fields in the Joomla default database complete enough? In this case I am thinking primarily about…

Adding Drag & Drop uploads to Joomla

We just updated the Weever Apps admin extension tonight, with a major overhaul of what was I think our weakest part -- uploads and general design management.

The solution was integrating a rather nifty ajax uploader into our extension called.. well.. "Ajax Uploader" that is available under GPLv2 by Andrew Valums -- http://valums.com/ajax-upload/.

What I like about it the most is that it doesn't require flash at all.…

Weever Apps for Joomla goes Free

Today we just opened up Weever Apps -- a service that lets you turn your website into an app -- as a free service.

All of our base features that we initially launched with are now part of a new "free" plan, and more specialized features, like Mapping and Directories are staying in a premium plan for now.

In any case - if you've got a Joomla (or WordPress) site and want to be visible and usable on the mobile web easily and elegantly, please check us out --…

Some thoughts about Transifex and Open Translators

One of the most lately exciting new projects in the Joomla community is the cooperation between  Open Translators and Transifex. Open Translators and Transifex has become a valuable resource both for devs, translators and end-users. Devs now has a great platform to reach translators and  provide complete translations for their extensions (and hopefully sell/provide more extension).… Continue

Should a CMS be a bit more old fashioned?

I probably have this wrong, but I get the impression that many early CMS type applications were designed on the basis of a couple of people using it and shoving information into the right sized holes so that it looked okay in a web browser.

There is nothing wrong with that, but there is an argument to say that prior to the web, it never worked that way. Actually, it was far more flexible and maliable and how the system worked was a reflection of the type of information involved, and…

What are the security implications of NOT upgrading from Joomla 1.5?

In the last two weeks I have had two business friends who have had their Joomla 1.5 websites hacked into. In both cases it resulted in a small line of javascript added to article content in the database that redirected the visitor to an adult web site (directory site) or which added an iFrame.

I only have one 1.5 site left (typically, it is one of my own!) and have not had this issue, but I gather that this has happened quite a lot recently.

Now, I have no…

Confession from an Ex PC User

In late 2008, I fronted up at the local Joomla Users Group (in Melbourne, Australia) to be confronted with more matters of great mystery for which my background left me poorly prepared.

However, with barely a sideways glance and pertinent knowledge that you could fit on a postage stamp, I cobbled together a Joomla component which still resides on the JED, every now and then causing people on the other side of the world to…
