Over the last 10 years I have attended countless Mambo, Joomla, Linux and other open source events and I'm convinced that this was the
best of the lot.
It's hard to say exactly what it was that made this event the best.
But I've given it a go....

Almost a year a go I wrote a proposal for a "
Joomla Supporters Club"
Unfortunately perhaps the timing wasn't right and despite positive comments from the Joomla community the idea sadly fell on deaf ears.
In the last few weeks several people have contacted me about trying again.
So never being one to give up at the first attempt I'm making another attempt to get this

There has been some discussion and comment on the development list recently about the design of sample templates for the upcoming Joomla 1.6 release.
Have you considered what they should look like, their functionality and most importantly their purpose?
Are they intended to be used on production sites or are they a showcase of the potential for Joomla templates?

The other day I was conducting a review of a new web site and came across my favourite usability failure.
Drop Down menus suck!!
Not the whole menu of course just the bad habit of site builders who add functionality to the top level link.
Let me explain
When you create a drop down menu with a top level of Home, News, About, Events do you make those top level items selectable or are they just placeholders.

For the last few months I've been working hard with a team of amazing developers, designers and user interface gurus on a top secret project, protected by stacks of Non Disclosure Agreements, contracts and other legal protections.
I'm excited that at last I can reveal that Apple's new pad/tablet/slate (sorry still can't reveal the name for another 24 hours) ships by default with an application management and help system written using the Joomla framework.

As we approach not only the end of the year but the end of a decade I spent a little time looking back at some articles I wrote back in 2007. Finding this one I was perhaps not surprised but definitely disappointed that it's as true today as it was then.
The article was not looked at with a critical eye or an open mind in 2007, perhaps it is different today as the same discussions are still…

I've been trying to think of a light hearted and topical blog post for this time of year when I remembered a tweet requesting a Joomla Xmas Carol.
Below you will find "my" version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" and I've taken a few liberties with the numbers.
I'm sure you can do better either by offering an alternative line for this Carol or with your own Joomla Carol.
On the first day of Christmas,
my Joomla! gave to me
ACL in Joomla! 1.6 ACL in Joomla! 1.6
On the second.... (…

Brian Teeman on the roles and responsibilites of users and community members in an open source project.
This is the first of several longer blog posts that examine the culture and ethos of an Open Source project, it's development, management, community and future.
Participation in the development of an Open Source Project is in almost all cases voluntary and traditional managemen…

Today I'd like to introduce two other "improvements" to…

The Daily Telegraph newspaper is one of the more traditional and conservative (small c and big c) newspapers in the UK and is almost the only daily newspaper that still uses the broadsheetbroadsheet format it also has the highest circulation of any "quality" newspaper.
In today's edition the Art Section has a special feature on the Best Culture websites and there are two joomla web sites right there at the top of the tree.

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.…

Sadly in the last 6 months there have been two published circumstances where an extension provider has been hacked and malicious code inserted into the extensions that they offer.
This meant that as soon as you installed the extension your site was vulnerable to defacement etc.
If there have been two published cases perhaps there have been more that we don't know about.
So is there anything we can do to prevent this?

..or how do you keep your Joomla web site secure?

I've sat on this blog post for a few weeks as I wanted to separate any connection to the specific client for who this relates to.
So I'm sat in a hotel bedroom, idling away the time before bed, browsing a news sites when a skype window pops up on my Mac.
"Please help!!!! I've got 12 sites all on different servers and they keep getting de…
