Andrew Eddie has published some excellent doc on JDatabaseQuery and the database changes in 1.6. Good resource for developers looking to upgrade Extensions to 1.6.
Also, you'll want to look at theConverting Old Extensions. Unfortunately, the big changes that are hitting a lot of Extensions are identified in the section Joomla 1.0 to 1.5.
The legacy support was intended to provide breathing room to bring change in. After three years, there is no more breathing room for the legacy 1.0 code. In a couple of years, those who recognize global $mainframe; will be called old timers by the up and comers.
It's helpful documentation. Appreciate Andrew sharing this with us.

Comment by Marius van Rijnsoever on February 11, 2011 at 11:46pm The problem with the Joomla wiki at the moment is that absolutely no external linking is allowed. Some information that I added (including a link to one of Andrews blogs) where removed by wiki admins. Andrew also has commercial motives to post on his own blog rather than the Joomla wiki (more traffic on his site to get sales), as he charges people for additional tutorials:

Yes you have read it correctly. It is ->forbidden<- to have ->any<- external link on the Joomla wiki. As all external links are classified as "self promotion". This policy making gone crazy and has the risk that the Joomla wiki will become outdated and very limited.
I have asked many people (including andrew) if I could re-produce tutorials on the joomla wiki with their permission. Not surprisingly everybody that I contacted declined to have their information put on the Joomla wiki...... (as nobody likes the strict licencing http://docs.joomla.org/JEDL)
Thanks, Marius

Me too!
@All
IMO, the wiki is already outdated and very limited (and has been for quite a while). I too think the ban on external links in the wiki is a an impediment to progress. I've run into same problem when trying to contribute documentation I've generated. I can cut and paste stuff from external sources ad infinitum, but cannot have external links to same stuff.
Also, does not make sense to me that I can put external links in forum posts but not on wiki!!
Other OSS projects appear to take a much simpler approach to documentation licensing:

HarryB - you are not allowed to link in the forum posts to your own material, either. Even free software devs are not allowed to link to support documentation available on their site that relates directly to a question asked by a user.
For me to remain sane (ok, maybe that's a stretch) - I have to file all of this Joomla silliness under the "Be the change you wish to see in the world" heading. If we want a collaborative developer and site builder community, it is up to us to make that happen. And, I feel we are starting to do that.
Comment by HarryB on February 12, 2011 at 7:37am OK, my bad...but you can still cut and paste ad infinitum...same result but maintains veneer of purity and righteousness. And you can also cite reference in unlinked text. :)
I"m not about to tilt with the windmills;, just commenting on passing scene. I do what the "system" allows, whatever and wherever that system may be. I almost never use the wiki anyway, except for those infrequent times I contribute stuff (and have to again retake wiki 101).
Happy Lincoln's Birthday (the man, not the city!)
Have a good day
And, thankfully you do, otherwise, we would not have the CSS IDs or Classes defined for 1.6, either.
