business models for developing GPL Joomla! extensions

Just posted this on the general-dev-list: http://groups.google.com/group/joomla-dev-general/browse_thread/thr...

I'd like to further investigate business models for developing GPL Joomla! extensions. Thoughts and suggestions welcome. It would be nice if we could compile a nice list of possibilities.

We just had a nice discussion about Joomla! extensions and GPL here: http://groups.google.com/group/joomla-dev-general/browse_thread/thr...
And terribly much has been written about it in the past; sometimes seems like this community is writing more comments than code ;-)

I would like it if in this thread we abstain from discussions about wether the GPL is necessary for extensions or whether commercial GPL is possible, but just look if we can just positively describe business models and give some examples of how to earn a living developing Joomla! extensions that are distributed under GPL.

Contributions welcome!

I was surprised to see what happened after taking a more pragmatic stance in this GPL-issue. Some good points were made in this ongoing discussion. We'll make a summary afterwards. Proposed it as a starter for a "round table" session on "J & Bejond".
