Fighting Spam in a Joomla Powered Website

SPAM ! This is one problem that any webmaster today has to contend with in his daily tasks. If not dealt with on a fundamental level it can really become a pain in the neck & also end up in consuming time. Not removing Spam comments /registrations/ forums posts on websites can really be harmful for its reputation & credibility.

Your comments & inputs are highly appreciated.

and the link to your blog post? :P

I'll have not pick mine yet so I'll share my experience with whatever I chose (looks like moovur will be it since I am only using com_user, for now that is).

For commenting is yet to be decided. Since none commenting system integrates well enough with a site that combines both k2 and FlexiContent. Now Zoo by Yoo looks very very promising though. WP for Joomla is too costly just to have that "Reply to this comment" function.

I added reCaptcha to the registration and "contact us" form on the sites that I manage. That helped a lot.

My advice: Any form of captcha, like Flash, should only be used when absolutely all other avenues have been exhausted.

That said, I've had intermittent false positives on Akismet and Mollum, talking at length with their engineers on how a Spamcop/SPF protected domain can get blacklisted.

One of the more interesting finds I've come across is this:
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/authentic...

which looks to be the best solution since it hits login/comments and anything else when used in conjuction with Bad Behaviour, Akismet or Mollum.

Leo, it's a good tool. However, in my travels the earlier PHP-based editions of it (not primarily Joomla) were based under Creative Commons, so there is a risk of tainted code/incorrect listing on part of JED. Already approached Paul for clarification but got no answer as yet. Line by line codebase comparison using Winmerge does highlight the problem, though.
