Greg Ferenstein - The Science of Building Trust With Social Media

http://mashable.com/2010/02/24/social-media-trust/

The Internet-era has made establishing trust an increasingly complicated issue. Our finely tuned ability to read facial expressions does not apply to e-mail, and emoticons are, at best, an imperfect substitute for sarcastic inflection (raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten into trouble for typing something that was meant to be a joke). So, how can we establish trust when our online identities are often little more than an avatar and few lines of text?

Great article. Perhaps we (the ATAAW and Joomla!) Community can learn something from this article.

I think one of the reasons why articles, blogs, comments, emails and other text sometimes end up being quite long is that the lack of body language and voice intonation has to be compensated by clear and precise words. That's why it's best to solve emails issues by voice, why I am not a fan of SMS and why I think Twitter is as risky as it is useful. Not all messages have to be long, not at all, but there has to be space to make it long if need be.
It's not a new problem: if businessmen didn't need face-to-face contact they wouldn't have traveled so much in the last decades.
