No.
Molajo is a set of extensions that runs with Joomla! 1.6.
Those extensions will be packaged with a copy of Joomla! 1.6 as a distribution.
Our goal is to enable the update facility in 1.6 that will make it easier to keep the extensions and distribution up to date.
Some extensions will be shared individually if we feel it has good potential to drive collaboration with other developers. We will make available specific ways that people can help enhance this work that we hope is embraced by other developers and used to help make Joomla! extensions much easier to integrate.
Do we think there are problems in the project and community?
Yes. Big ones. How can you even ask? Where have you been?
Whose fault is it?
All of ours, along with the responsibility to do something about it.
Is Joomla! 1.6 is a worthwhile release?
Yes, there are improvements there that you won't see until you start digging in and creating extensions with it. It's much better than 1.5. Once we get the hang of it, Components are much more quickly developed. I hope to share a starter Component soon that might help others see that.
Is 1.6 buggy?
Damn right is. Let's get issues reported and fixed. That' s our job.
Is it difficult to migrate Components?
Yes. In many cases, you might find starting over is easier. Don't try to avoid the MVC parent classes or you will not get the value of the upgrade.
So, why is it better then?
Because it sets the foundation for tighter integration through common events and creates an extremely extensible layout system adding in alternative layouts and alternative menu items. That is on top of ACL and nested categories.
OK, now you. What's going on? How's your migration coming along? Have you kicked your dog yet?
Very likely the updates for the Core will come from Molajo. We are still thinking about that, though. The reason for that is we are hoping to uninstall many Extensions. So, when a new release comes out, we'll run it through a process to get the new, smaller version.
What are your thoughts, pro and con on that?
So molajo will be independent of Joomla! meaning Molajo will not fully rely on the joomla project for future core code updates. The Molajo developers will maintain this code and provide updates as needed ( ie security, features ...)
I have been watching Molajo for a while, but I still my not fully understand it. Correct me where I am wrong. Molajo took Joomla 1.6 striped out some code to make it "lighter" added some code to make things better and developed several extensions to market to a set market. Im I right so far?
Molajo is definitely 100% dependent on Joomla!, but yes, I think you have the jest of it.
We will not maintain a separate copy of Joomla! core code. We do not hack the core code. We will get a copy with each release, using a batch process, uninstall that which we do not want to distribute, like Templates, for example, that we are going to replace with Minima and Molajito (ask Cristina for how she spells the name of her template) and then create a new zip that will be available on our server. Users will be notified that a new zip is available and can install inside of the administrator.
All of the other code we will share will be packed individually as extensions and then bundled with the stripped down core as a single, installable package. So, when the comments extension needs to be updated, it will be made available on our server and can be updated inside of the Administrator using the new 1.6 remote update process.
Molajo itself will not have "a release." It's merely a distribution of other software - each of which have their own release cycle.
Also - it's important to understand that our goal is not to compete with the project for users . We want Molajo to help drive collaboration within our developer and site builder community. We hope site builders and developers get involved and help bring improvements to Molajo and THEY take it out to users. Trying to pull community together in a way that they have something tangible to work on and improve.
The same thinking went into the membership of ATAAW. We have not advertised except through word of mouth. We check folks out when they enroll. We want to find community and help build involvement.
Molajo will not change the core language files. There is a lot of good work in those translations and that work will be made available through Molajo.
Molajo WILL have more language strings that need to be translated. We have a small translation team that will help us get that organized so folks can get involved.
Thanks Steven for your question.
WHAT! No out of the box translation!!
Kidding. If you people need help with a Dutch translation... You know where to find me.
Ok so if I already have a site built using Joomla 1.6 I will be able to download and install the extensions that are being written OR I can download the Molajo distro and re build my site? So either way I will be able to get the extensions that are being created and plug them right into any Joomla 1.6 installation.
If a developer chooses to use Molajo distro but already started using joomla 1.6 will it be a simple procedure to export the content ( using phpmyadmin I am sure) and plug it right into Molajo.
Since there are no core file changes I would assume that any existing 1.6 extensions will work just fine.?
