Is Joomla ready for the mobile devices platform? Good question. 2010 will certainly be the year for mobile devices. There are a few mobile extensions for Joomla, some work, some don't work very well and some are still in beta.

iPad, iTablet, smart phones and others. More people throughout the globe will be looking to mobile devices to connect via the Internet to websites for information, with friends, purchasing of products, banking and a whole range of other services.

I think Joomla should be in a position to provide for the mobile device market. Current Joomla websites will require re-jigging for the mobile revolution.

Technically you could create a mobile theme, I'm working on one for my company now and its easy - unless your using SOBI or Virtual Mart. Once your theme is built, pick up one of the auto detect plugins(I'm using mobilenbot) and your done. Osmobi.com is a easy solution as well.

Im keen to explore getting the admin more accessible via iphone etc. I know Admin Praise has mobile sensing but would be great if that happened out of the box.

My comments are general about the state of play for the mobile platform through 2010. I am already using Joomlamobile. Joomla extension developers should be prepping apps now for this growing market segment. Web sites which are not built for mobile devices will find loss of traffic and a decline in business. So, having said that I am proposing a group of web site developers forming an alliance to rebuild non-mobile web sites for the mobile market. Any takers?

There are a growing number of companies that provide this as a service. Joomla template agencies are also starting to wise up to the trend. I'd say this movement is already in full swing, we ALL need to be mobile-aware or risk falling behind on the competitive front.

Personally I think the rapid increase of the importance of mobile devices means that mobile compatibility is about to become a basic requirement. That I think means 1.6 should have a mobile template built in.
