Joomla! Ubuntu Super Hero Needed for Joomla! 1.6 Installation

Hey you Ubuntu desktop Joomla! users! I noticed tonight that one of my favorate technology writers, Bruce Byfield published a recent article in the Linux Magazine entitled Installing Joomla! as a local server. He was helping a buddy get a J! Web site up and running and he ran into the problem of too much documentation, most of which is now outdated.

We need a Joomla! Ubuntu geek to help out! Would you please read Bruce's article and document what it takes to build a localhost environment and install Joomla! on the platform? You could do this by using the Joomla! Documentation Wiki, or by creating a video, and then publishing it within the Joomla! Bug Squad.

When you are done, I would also ask that you respond to Bruce's article and ask him for his feedback on your work. Make certain to thank him for the comments he made -- and especially for helping his friend get started with Joomla!. (Plus, let us know, as well!)

Thanks to the Joomla! Ubuntu super hero who steps up to this challenge! Thanks for helping to move Joomla! Forward!

Hi Amy,

I'll just finish re-installing my Ubuntu Server and I'll try to make a step-by-step list.

But so far - I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a spare PC and specified LAMP during installation.

Then added the eBox 1.5 ppa and installed the packages I felt I needed. This makes it a lot easier to set up some things like DNS (if you want that). Actually - extremely easy!

Added PhpMyAdmin (just installed the package)

Did a bit of configuring of the server through the eBox interface.

I am ready to install Joomla tomorrow. But first a bit of sleep.

eBox 1.5 is a beta of the upcoming 2.0. It is the the nicest I have seen so far when it comes to control a Linux server (not only like a webhotel type of thing, but more like a workgroup server etc.) and it would be REALLY cool if someone could jump in and make a module for eBox that grabbed the latest version of Joomla, asked what folder to install it in and gave you a finished install...

Back in a few hours!

Here we go: http://www.odino.org/development/content-management-systems/joomla-...

There may be a few mistakes 'cause I've written it very fast as I came to office this morning, tell me if I forgot anything.

Amy, do I need to copy it here in ATAAW? Or in The J! wiki?
