It seems MySQL got forked by its original creator.
It would be interesting to know if Joomla! and other systems will support MariaDB.

P.S. Maria is the name of the second daughter of the original author Monty. The name of the first daughter is My :)

I can't see that happening until hosting providers(at least the major ones) decide what they are going to do.

Quite valid point. Probably also depends very much on Oracle's plans for MySQL, not quite clear so far.

What could be also very very interesting to look at is this new Swedish extreme powerful graph database Neo4j ! Also in a open source version.

Neo4j – a robust , highly performance and scalable graph database – is open source and available for free for open source projects

Why Neo?

Neo4j is a graph database, which means that it excels at storing graph-like data (networks) but can handle all types of information. For many applications, Neo4j offers performance improvements on the order of 1000x or more compared to relational DBs.
