On Saturday, the Nooku team proudly opened the Nooku Developer Portal. If you are a Joomla! developer, you should take time to check out the Nooku Framework. Most of you know that the team is headed by Johan Janssens who lead the Joomla! 1.5 effort and has been dubbed by all as "the architect" of the 1.5 framework. He, and his team, continue his vision of the framework with Nooku.

They have a very active email list which was just opened with read access to the public and you can request membership.

In looking through conversations, I was impressed with the topics and interaction. The team is very responsive to developer questions, in fact, Johan apparently took it as a challenge to provide full featured REST support and instructions how to use it, in response to a developer question. I was encouraged also to see discussions on using OAuth with REST. So, it appears they are advancing in the right areas and we need this type of integration for J!.

The Nooku Framework is best known for carving application development time by seriously reducing the amount of code that must be written to create Joomla! components. The only downside to using Nooku is that it is a replacement for the Joomla! 1.5 Framework. Now, I know all Nooku supporters are frowning having read that statement, but it's true -- we aren't talking about loading a JS file here, it's a replacement of the basic Joomla! framework. Having said that, it's also important to remember - the dude credited for architecting the Joomla! framework is the same guy behind the Nooku Framework, so we are in very good hands.

Question is - where we all going as these frameworks continue to diverge? I am not quite sure, yet, but I do know it would be stupid to stop anyone in forward progress. If you are a Joomla! developer, you should check out Nooku, build a Component, and see for yourself. If nothing else, we should understand what the potential that should be offered in the Joomla! framework.

Congratulations to the Nooku Team and THANKS! for sharing the Nooku Framework with all of us.

Amy thanks for the post, appreciated. If one was to infer that Nooku is actually heading the direction of innovation and vision the principal architect of Joomla! 1.5 had for Joomla all along, then its position in the Joomla! family tree makes much more sense. The devs are just getting warmed up. The community is having a ball and the future looks great.

Thanks Amy for the post. Very much appreciated.

You pose an interesting question. I'm very excited about all the innovation happening in the Joomla community, GPL efforts like Gantry Framework and our Nooku Framework demonstrate the power of open source community driven innovation. The future might be unknow, but it certainly looks bright.

Personaly I lean more towards a vision for Joomla's future then a concrete roadmap.

At Nooku we adhere to the principles of Agile Software Development. For us this means working in small, iterative steps which continuously result in usable software. We abandon road maps with a final goal in favour of a direction with markers for the journey. We utilize experience from the process instead of making big plans based on assumptions.

We do have a roadmap to lay out those markers for the short term an idea to help us keep the conversations and collaboration focussed.

For Joomla I would be very happy with a strategic vision to help me understand where Joomla is heading. It would help our community understand how we can help to make that vision reality.

If there is a vision, it has not been shared.
