Pretty links in Joomla - what is the most solid approach?

I have a blog where I will keep using WordPress just to stay on top of what is going on there. And one thing i really LOVE about WordPress is how simple it is to get it to use pretty links.

Basically, set up the format you want and be done with it. So I use links like this:

What I also love is that for each article, I can edit how the links will look.

I have not played around a lot with the options in Joomla lately, but feel there are a couple of sites I am setting up now that will benefit from this. And generally, I like having links that humans have a chance to understand.

To me, it is not as much about SEO as it is about making it somewhat readable for humans.

What are your experiences with the built-in system in Joomla, and what other extensions would you recommend? I use a variety of extensions (K2, SOBI2, Kunena just to mention a few, and also looking into JomSocial).

One important thing - it has to be a rock solid solution! I can not afford to have it fail.

I use Sobi2 on almost everything I do, and it is probably the hardest to get working in 3rd party SEF solutions. It works great with the standard Joomla SEF solution though using the free sobiSEF plugin.

You can visit my site here and see standard Joomla SEF in action. http://www.robertswebdesign.com

The Portfolio is Sobi2. Everything else is standard Joomla sections/categories and articles. Even the blog.

Your site looks really great! And you have a very nice portfolio. From what I have seen on your site and my understanding on what you say here, the standard Joomla SEF is the way to go for me.

Thanks for the kind words... if I could just get some of my newer stuff in the portfolio, I'd be doing alot better... I haven't added anything that I did in 2009 or this year yet. Just no time.

Stock SEF is fine for me - for SEO/SEM there are more important things to worry about than the URL.

Stock SEF has few problems - inconsistencies you get because menu url's are clashing with component router created ones, inabilty to create custom redirects etc. It really depends on what you need - for performance go with stock SEF, otherwise try one of 3rd party components available.

@Klas - this is something I would like to know more about. Can you try to give some examples of clashes?

Also, what 3rd party component have you been using?

I never used it Leo, but I can make sobi2 do exactly that and more... plus I'm on the sobi2 dev team, so I'm going to reach for it every time.

I'm sure you can find better support desk software than your own, but you would be foolish to reach for anything other than your own for your own site, correct?

The original question I was trying to answer was sobi2 and an SEF solution. And then used my own site to show the URL structure with stock SEF and sobi2.

I wasn't trying to show off sobi2 as a portfolio really... now if you want to see a killer sobi2 site... check out this one I did...
