Steve Saunders of InternetEvolution has an interesting view of the future of the Internet, which he shared in the 21 June 2010 edition of InformationWeek...including the roles CMS, social networking and search engines wll play in creating this future.
It's an interesting view, but I doubt anyone can imagine the future of the Internet in 20 years from now.
It's good to see possible negatives, but the positives are missing in there.
I was one of the presenters with Robert Cailliau on the scene in 1993/1994 at CERN in Geneva and other places when the web was presented to the press. Robert knew the web would become big, but frankly probably neither him nor me did realize how huge and dynamic it would become...
It has been an amazing ride, and it's going to be even more amazing in the following years.
I agree with Beat here, I don't know how anyone can feasibly predict the future.
The picture painted in the link above has a somewhat morbid viewpoint, but I'm sure much of the same could be said if we were to attempt to view it from that perspective even today.
Personally I think whatever it becomes will be where humanity takes it at that time... meaning it will reflect our own morals and values of the day. I don't fear 20 years from now anymore than I fear today's internet, which to me is what I make of it.
If the human species continues to degenerate in values, then so will the internet.
