What is different in Joomla! than some other CMSs is that developers of extensions usually do not cooperate a lot. Everyone has his own vision and it is not that
simple to make hooks between extensions. Therefore, if you go to JED, you may
notice that the interaction plugins/components etc. between major extensions
are usually developed by someone completely different developer.

While it has some advantages, it also has disadvantages, but not that far ago, every developer within the community was more or less egoist. It was even rarely to
find re-usage of code etc.

What I noticed in the last months is that the template developers appear to be the first major players that make a breakthrough on that.

Rockettheme for example used the template overwrites from Yootheme to reuse them in their template framework Gantry.

Today I saw that Gavick is adopting T3 framework from Joomlart.

Even these companies are competitors, it is the first time to see such admiration of other’s work in Joomla! And I personally find this very positive.

What do you think?

It 'a good starting point.
I hope it does not remain an isolated case only references to templates

I just wrote elsewhere that the power of open source is that the wheel does not have to be reinvented. So i'm all for extension/template developers reuing each other's code. May the best code spread!

@Ewout - it is very good, indeed. What I was surprised in the past is that these companies reused code, trying to hide this. And the code was GPL.
Now they probably understand that there is nothing wrong to use competitors work, if they credit, where credit is due. It is a huge step ahead.
Now these companies understand that if the business environment is good, it will be good for all of them.

@Ivo, your second interesting post today and yet its so early, don't you sleep ;)

Well, there is no doubt about the incentive of reuse. So if more of that is not happening in spite of one sees extensions/code bases that are of such quality, then afaics something is wrong with the business. I would rather see it as, they might have their own idea of how things should be done and want to develop their own competitive edge and therefore take a run for it, and that's I guess one of the major factors that makes J to be J.

Further, maybe these extension developers need a place to meet and develop this bond...tried to navigate through forum.joomla.org and didn't see any suitable area for that over there and they probably need a secluded area...away from the eye of their customers...

I was once surprised by a reaction from a certain provider not being aware of the other one and is just wondering if it have to do with poor research of their market and competitors, or just the way they officially respond to those types of inquiries.
