Just wondering how user friendly will it be migrating from 1.5 to 1.6..?

I have never liked the process of upgrading from 1.0 to 1.5 (some how the process was time consuming, it was like moving from a totally different platform) Unless I did things the wrong way.

Oh! and how compatible will the extensions you used on 1.5 be on 1.6?

Hi there,

I presume you have not stumbled upon this article by Brian Teeman: http://brian.teeman.net/joomla-gps/should-i-wait-for-joomla-16.html

I wish I know the answer to your question but the truth is, IMO, no one could. The best answer to compatibility issues for extensions is to ask the developers of the extensions themselves; and how could they answer it when Joomla 1.6 is not even out yet?

However, indication from past history we had 1.0 legacy mode, so I presume maybe there's something like that. Read the article I posted. It helped me a lot on deciding on getting started for my project and hopefully, it will help you too :)

Hi Mfundo,

We have already tested some of our own Joomla! 1.5 extensions under the Joomla! 1.6 Alpha and most of them worked fine. It just depends what kind of functionality the extensions offer. In general: Simple MVC-components, modules and plugins will just work fine without the need to modify anything. But if you're hooking into more advanced functionality (XML-RPC comes to my mind, it is completely rewritten in 1.6) you might need changes.

It is my understanding that there will be no legacy mode capability in Joomla! 1.6.

Legacy support for 1.0 is indeed gone. Haven't looked at any migration yet so this is all guesswork, but my guess is that it's a bit more simple than the 1.0 to 1.5 migration. All databases should be UTF-8 by now, so in theory a .sql script can be used to upgrade that. Files can be overwritten. That said, all extensions you will be using need to be 1.6 compatible as well. This is the first thing that should be checked with the individual developers.

Thanks Guys...

Just didn't want to upgrade 10 sites if it was the same process as migrating from 1.0x to 1.5!!

:)

May we get your feedback on Strelin CMS? It is a Joomla! 1.5 fork, providing equivalent features for extended ACL and multiple categories coming in Joomla! 1.6. The goal is to provide similar or better features than Joomla! 1.6 without breaking any compatibility and without any migration issues. Of course all of Joomla! 1.5 extensions will work with Strelin.

Thanks for your time.

Go ahead and open a topic if you want to discuss your fork project.

It's better to do that then hijack someone's topic.

Thanks!
